Taekwondo Australia Takes Poomsae to a New and Exciting Level
The Technical Board has taken the first steps on a journey that will
take Poomsae in Australia to a level never seen before. Through monthly
training camps members will see the development of a Technical Performance
Program which will ultimately see the skill development of our technical
athletes be vastly accelerated.
In 2006, our goal is success at the World Poomsae Championships in September
2006 and for Juniors (14-17) success at World Junior Poomsae Championships
in Vietnam in June 2006. Leading up to these Championships will be competitions
at State Level and the Korean Open in May/June 2006.
To assist the program achieve its goals the following important appointments
have been made.
- Master Hyung-Kook Kang, 7th Dan Kukkiwon, has been appointed to the
position of National Junior and Senior Poomsae Coach. Master Kang has
many years of proven success as Chief of the National Korean Demonstration
Team, including the 24th Olympic Games held in Seoul, Korea.
- Ms Anne Povh has been appointed to the position of National Junior
and Senior Poomsae Manager. Anne is passionate about poomsae competition
and wants to see the talented technical players in Australia reach their
full potential – she is a motivated, proactive person with a high
standard of administration skills.
The first of several planned weekend National Training Camps took place
in Sydney over the weekend of 29-30 October 2005. The squad also has access
to high level coach Master Kim from Western Australia, and Greg Butterworth
from Victoria for fitness assessment.
Participation at the Camp was open to Black Belts who were medal winners
in relevant World Championship divisions at the recent 2005 Australian
National Championships held in Hobart and/or had been selected for and
competed at major international events in the past 2 years.
The weekend was a huge success with 22 participants from all over Australia
in attendance for two full days of intense training. The training was
very specific, covering areas of Technique, Focus and Inner Strength.
Participants were given instruction on nutrition, recovery and hydration
and were encouraged to use the information given in a practical sense.
All participants were fitness tested for strength, power and flexibility
(passive and active). The data was then collated and individually rated,
this information will be updated at the training camps on an on-going
basis.
It is envisaged that state based monthly technical training sessions
will soon evolve utilising the State Technical Directors. This will help
with the preparation of our juniors and their progression to the senior
ranks and on to elite levels in the future.
The final Junior and Senior Squad will be selected from participation
levels, technical and skill ability demonstrated at the Training Camps,
with a high level personal drive and motivation and the Selection Trials
to be held in April of 2006 at the 2nd National Muyae Tournament.
The next training camp will see participation expanded to include Juniors
born between 1989 and 1992 who won medals at the 2005 Australian National
Championships.
Poomsae is entering an exciting stage of development!
