  • Ché Baker's Take On The Aussie Assualt At The 2005 World Championships

Okay, well if I'm going to be quoted and put up on the website, here it is in Proper....until I watch the tapes!

Australia started this world championships with one bronzed Aussie, Carmon Marton - and today, day three of competition, we see that Aussie men too know how to be bronzed, a long way from Bondii Beach....not that the man in question has ever been there! Daniel Jukic from Melbourne upped Australia's medal haul to 2 bronze with a stellar performance in what was his first world championships.
Daniel made it through his early rounds well, with explosive counters and lightning doubles. His progress was as follows:
V GERMANY won 8:5
Vs ICELEND 6:5
Vs Argentina
Vs Iran (semi-final)

Also Fighting on day three was Lisa Carnelli who came up against Canada. When I say Canada, I think it was her Vs the whole of Canada and not just the player - they seemed to bring their whole country over. Lisa fought an excellent counter game, but was eventually overpowered by the much larger and more aggressive Canadian girl.
Vs CANADA (loss) 8:3

Brother Ryan won his first real battle the day before he fought when he made his weight, something which up until the last hour or so before hand didn't look like it was going to happen. If Ryan was dehyrated or exhausted in any way though, he didn't show it, defeating an absolute gun from Usbekistan in a tight contest 5:5(-1),
He then settled to outclass Turkey 10:6,
But finally went down in the quarter finals to Iran 7:4, a match which saw Carnelli win the 2nd and 3rd rounds, but unable to make up an unsettled start.

Tina Morgan came into this championships on fire, but experienced what it means to face a hometown hero. Tina drew SPAIN in her first round, and although looked to be landing points, the scores weren't going up. At the end of the fight Coach Jintae Jong, kept his player on the court in protest of the harsh scoring, but point interpretation as of yet, is no grounds for an official protest, and Tina's campaign ended early. She went down to Spain 6:5.

Day four of the competition has another 4 players on the mats. Jake Ryan made it comfortably through his first round this morning against Romania, slipping out of the European's range and countering to move on 5:1

SAFWAN KHALIL is one of Australia's best prospect's and rising young talents. He defeated Mexico 8:5. I'll keep you updated when I can today!!! Tumay is looking over my shoulder to see what I'm writing about him, but I'm not going to give into pressure and mention his name. DOH!

JESSICA JORDAN started well in her first world championships, but found TURKEY extremely experienced. With the Score at 6:2 however, her opponent fell with a knee injury and was unable to continue. Jessica moved on to her second round fight where she was again down by several points. This time though, she fired up to force a draw and take the match into golden point. Unfortunately she lost the sudden death play off.

Okay, it’s a bit later now. Erica is still in, and Jake just won his second. I’ll keep you in touch Australia (so long as Stewart stops stealing my laptop)!

Thorlefsson Bjorn (ISL)6:5 Martin Dario (ARG) 1:0 he then went up against Kricka Kiko (SUI) in the quarter final and defeated him 5:4
The semi final had Daniel up against Tajik Ali (IRI) and was defeated 10:6

NEWS JUST COME IN ............

More updates as they come in.

  • More News From The World Championships

On the second day of competition, Australia had competitors in 2 divisions, that being Fly and Middle Weight.

As one of the best represented teams, we had 4 fighters competing - Kylie Treadwell
-Stephanie Ng
-Tumay Humza
-Bashara Fram

The following information has been sent to us from our correspondant, Mr Che Baker, from the venue in Madrid.

"Although I have no stats on me at the moment, I can give a brief comment on the performances, which, without exception, were excellent.

Bashara fought a Russian who was of course about a foot and half taller than Bash. true to form, Bash slammed in some seriously weighted roundhouse and back kicks to lead 3-0 halfway through the 2nd round. Considering the Russian had a full point deduction and because of the way the new rules work with this, it was literally 4-0. Bash's focus then started to drift a little however, and then another of his kicks went up on the Russian's score. Slowly the Russian got back point by point and won the match.

Stephanie won 2 of her fights and really nailed some points in her third, but ended up going down to the Spanish girl.

Both Kylie and Tumay were, in my opinion, far superior fighters to their opponents, but through a couple of factors didn't pass their first round. one of those factors was that a half point was taken off for pretty much every time anyone hit the ground.

All players weighed in for tomorrows contest..
RYAN CARNELI, LISA CARNELI, TINA MORGAN, DANIEL JUKIC

More from the venue tomorrow! "

Che Baker is also producing a video of the 2005 World Championships, and will be available in May.
