Commonwealth Championships Update

Commonwealth Taekwondo Union President Mr Ross Hartnett said of the 24th August 2006 correspondence from nations intending to participate in the Commonwealth Championships has increased dramatically. Among communications between Commonwealth countries and CTU president Mr Hartnett, were indications from Canada that their team will be in the vicinity of 40 athletes, New Zealand 20 plus athletes, England, Scotland, Singapore and Northern Ireland all confirmed teams also apart from sparring included are 6 poomsae competitors from Northern Ireland, thus far. Communication and information has also been exchanged between Tonga, Fiji and the CTU president in the last day or two.

Hong Kong had also requested that the Commonwealth Taekwondo Union consider extending a special invite to them, as a former Commonwealth Territory.

Taekwondo Australia Secretary General and Commonwealth Taekwondo Union executive council member, Mr Russell Macarthur, has also reported an increase in correspondence from countries in regard to the Championships and is pleased at the size of team participation from countries like Canada and New Zealand.

With some two months to go some 16 countries have indicated their interest to participate in the championships and it is expected that more details of their participation will be received over the next two weeks.

Commonwealth Taekwondo Union Referee Director, Mr Kim Seng, has reported that a list of 26 referees from 15 nations whom applied had been submitted to the WTF for approval to referee at the Championships. Mr Hartnett stated that Mr Seng had done an excellent job on behalf of the CTU and Taekwondo Australia in the administration of international referee participation.
